What Is a Holistic Life Coach?

The short answer

A holistic life coach helps people make lasting change by looking at the whole person, not one problem at a time. They work with clients on habits, stress, emotions, relationships, purpose and faith, because each affects the others. Coaching is forward-looking: it helps people set goals, see their patterns clearly and take action.

What does a holistic life coach do?

A holistic life coach guides clients toward change across body, mind, relationships and spirit. In sessions, a coach might help a client:

  • Notice how stress and worry are showing up in their body and daily life

  • Change thought patterns that keep them stuck

  • Build healthier routines for rest, food and movement

  • Strengthen communication in marriage and family

  • Get clear on purpose and take steps toward it

  • Bring faith into decisions instead of leaving it on the sidelines

What makes life coaching "holistic"?

Holistic coaching treats a person's health, emotions, relationships and spiritual life as connected. A typical coach might focus only on career or productivity. A holistic coach asks how the whole of life fits together. Someone can eat well and still struggle if their home is in constant crisis, and a holistic coach looks at both.

Is a holistic life coach the same as a therapist?

No. Coaching focuses on the present and future: goals, choices, habits and growth. Therapists are licensed mental health professionals who diagnose and treat mental health conditions. Good coaches know the difference and refer clients to a licensed professional when someone needs clinical care.

What is the difference between a health coach and a holistic life coach?

A health coach focuses mainly on physical health habits like food, sleep and exercise. A holistic life coach includes those but also works on emotions, relationships, purpose and spiritual life. Many practitioners combine both, which is how coaching fits into the Arukah approach.

How does faith fit into holistic life coaching?

In faith-based holistic coaching, Scripture and prayer give the coaching a framework. In the Arukah Method, coaching is organized around the five levels of the soul, from the physical (nefesh) to emotional (ruach), intellectual (neshamah), purposeful (chayah) and spiritual (yechidah) life.

I experienced this myself. During the hardest season of my family's life, marriage coaching and life coaching helped me see where the stress was coming from and respond with clarity. My faith gave that coaching its deeper meaning.

How do you become a holistic life coach?

Most holistic life coaches complete a coaching training program and then practice with real clients. Life coaching isn't licensed in the United States, and organizations such as the International Coaching Federation offer optional credentials. Look for training that teaches:

  1. Core coaching skills: listening, powerful questions and goal-setting

  2. How emotions, stress and relationships affect health

  3. When and how to refer clients to other professionals

  4. A clear framework for working with the whole person

  5. How to find and serve clients, if you want to build a practice
