Where do the five levels of the soul come from?
The five names come from Jewish tradition. The midrash Genesis Rabbah (14:9) teaches that the soul is called by five names: nefesh, ruach, neshamah, chayah and yechidah. Each is a Hebrew word for soul or life used in Scripture, and each describes a different dimension of a human being.
What are the five levels, one by one?
| Level | Hebrew meaning | What it covers | Caring for it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nefesh (נֶפֶשׁ) | Soul, living being | Physical vitality, the body, breath and blood | Nourishment, rest, safety, herbs and healthy habits |
| Ruach (רוּחַ) | Spirit, breath, wind | Emotions, relationships, expression | Emotional healing, communication, forgiveness |
| Neshamah (נְשָׁמָה) | Breath (of God) | Mind, understanding, conscience | Seeking truth, learning, discernment |
| Chayah (חַיָּה) | Life, living | Purpose and calling | Using your gifts to serve God and others |
| Yechidah (יְחִידָה) | One, unique | Oneness with the Creator | Prayer, faith, surrender |
What is nefesh?
Nefesh is the soul's physical level: your vitality and life force. Genesis 2:7 says man "became a living soul (nefesh chayah)." Caring for the nefesh means caring for the body, and without a strong nefesh, deeper healing is harder.
What is ruach?
Ruach is the emotional and relational level of the soul. Scripture describes a troubled ruach (Pharaoh, Genesis 41:8) and a renewed one ("renew a steadfast ruach within me," Psalm 51:10). Our emotions and relationships deeply affect our health.
What is neshamah?
Neshamah is the level of understanding: the capacity to seek truth and wisdom. It is the "breath of life" God breathed into Adam (Genesis 2:7) and the source of conscience and discernment. "The breath of the Almighty gives them understanding" (Job 32:8).
What is chayah?
Chayah is the level of purpose: living intentionally in your God-given calling. It moves beyond simply being alive to using your gifts to bless your family and community. "Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God" (Micah 6:8).
What is yechidah?
Yechidah is the deepest level: oneness with the Creator. It comes from yachid, meaning "one" or "unique," and echoes the Shema: "Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one" (Deuteronomy 6:4).
Why do the five levels of the soul matter for healing?
They show that healing touches every part of a person. A physical problem can be tied to emotional stress, a broken relationship, confusion about truth, a loss of purpose or a distance from God. My own migraines and thyroid crisis taught me this: nourishment mattered, but so did rest, my marriage, my trust in God and my sense of calling.
In the Arukah Method, the five levels are the framework for caring for the whole person, through nutrition and herbs for the nefesh and coaching and faith for the levels above it.
Quick FAQ
Are the five levels of the soul in the Bible?
All five words appear in the Hebrew Bible. The teaching that they are five levels of one soul comes from the midrash Genesis Rabbah.
Is this the same as Kabbalah?
The five names are older than medieval Kabbalah, which later developed them further. The Arukah Method explains the difference in its chapter on what Kabbalah is and isn't.
