Recently, a documentary aired on Netflix titled “Live to 100: Secrets of The Blue Zones” which takes viewers on a journey across the world to the Blue Zones. These are regions known for their exceptional longevity, with an unusually high proportion of centenarians.
While the documentary offers inspiring tales of vivacious elders who lead active lifestyles, it also heavily leans towards a plant-based narrative as the secret behind their longevity.
However, before we accept this story at face value, let's delve deeper into the dietetic nuances of these regions.
The Blue Zones in Focus:
Sardinia, Italy: The documentary appears to have omitted traditional dishes like 'porceddu', a roasted suckling pig delicacy. While I am a Jew and steer clear from pork and other meats deemed unclean by the Bible, I can still remain honest and admit that eating pig or not will not necessarily shorten your life.
Ikaria, Greece: Goat meat and raw milk are staple elements in the Ikarian diet, contrary to the documentary's portrayal. These foods are extremely nutritious and many of these nutrients are lacking in plant sources or are not as easily utilized by the body in plant form.
Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica: Their traditional diet isn't just beans and tortillas. It also encompasses meat, animal fat, bone soup, organ meats, and other animal-based products.
Okinawa, Japan: Historical records indicate that Okinawans consumed more animal foods than the rest of Japan, contrary to the documentary's reliance on a post-war dietary survey from 1949.
Intriguingly, Netflix does not delve into the story of Hong Kong, which boasts a high life expectancy and significant red meat consumption.
Loma Linda, California: While the majority are Seventh Day Adventists advocating plant-based diets, it's more plausible that their longevity is influenced by their abstention from tobacco and alcohol and their close-knit community bonds.
My Personal Healing Testimonies via Eating Meat & Dairy
I was once a seventh-day Adventist, vegetarian for over 10 years. When we tried to go vegan, I fell very ill and thought I could be on my death bed. It was actually this experience that first lead me to realize that I needed meat and dairy in order to heal from my health issues and stay healthy. This was also the experience that lead me to become a holistic healer and study nutrition, herbalism, etc.
After my studies, I became enraged with the church, because in my experience we were encouraged to go vegan as if we were sinners who didn’t really care about going to heaven if we ate meat and dairy. Many people gave up nutritious, home cooked meals to eat vegetarian junk foods and fake meats loaded with chemicals and preservatives and other harmful substances, thinking God was pleased with them for doing so!
Another major health crisis happened in 2022 due to unexpected extreme stress brought on by personal family matters. Again, I thought I was on my death bed. Again, it was through eating animal products - particularly the Carnivore diet, where I fasted on mostly animal products for several months - along with iodine supplementation, that helped me restore my health.
Additionally, a recent 2022 study suggests a positive correlation between meat consumption and lifespan.
The "Live to 100: Secrets of The Blue Zones" documentary beautifully captures the essence of some of the globe's remarkable regions and cultures. Nevertheless, it's essential to approach it with a discerning eye. The Blue Zones concept, initially formulated by Dan Buettner in 2003, later became associated with the 7th Day Adventist Church, possibly influencing the narrative direction.
While we always advocate for informed choices based on individual needs, it's crucial to be wary of overly simplified narratives. We believe that a balanced approach, encompassing animal foods and other nutrient sources, is vital for a holistic, healthy life.
The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat, and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet
Over the years, numerous health and nutrition books have hit the shelves, but few have been as transformative as Nina Teicholz's "The Big Fat Surprise: Why Butter, Meat, and Cheese Belong in a Healthy Diet." As a celebrated New York Times bestseller and recognized by many esteemed publications, this book is not just another volume on diet and health—it's a revelation.
Synopsis
At the heart of Teicholz's work is a provocative thesis: our long-standing beliefs about dietary fats have been fundamentally flawed. For decades, conventional wisdom has painted fats—especially those from red meat, dairy, and cheese—as villains in our diets. But what if this entire narrative was based on shaky science?
"The Big Fat Surprise" unravels the labyrinth of nutrition studies that have led us astray for over half a century. Teicholz uncovers how low-fat dietary guidelines, which many of us have adhered to diligently, might have been a colossal and detrimental experiment on public health.
Why Should You Read It?
1. Investigative Depth: As an investigative journalist, Teicholz does not merely scratch the surface. She dives deep into the annals of nutrition science, exposing the biases, errors, and egos that have tainted our understanding of dietary fats.
2. Engaging Narrative: This isn't a dry academic text. Teicholz crafts a story that's as gripping as it is informative, making complex science accessible and intriguing.
3. A Paradigm Shift: This book challenges a lot of the 'knowns' in nutrition. It encourages readers to question and critically assess the dietary guidelines that many of us have accepted without doubt.
4. Empowering: With knowledge comes power. Understanding the potential benefits of "whole fats" can liberate you from unfounded dietary guilt and introduce a more holistic approach to health.
