Debunking Stevia Myth

Did you know that stevia, known as ka’a he’e in Guaraní, has been used by the Guaraní people in Paraguay for its medicinal properties, including regulating blood sugar? However, there was a misconception that it could harm fertility due to certain tribes using stevia tea as a contraceptive.

The idea that stevia affects fertility comes from two controversial studies. In 1968, Joseph Kruc from Purdue University found that stevia reduced fertility in female rats, but his study was criticized for dubious scientific methods and couldn't be replicated. He later admitted that the lower fertility rates might have been due to overdosing the rats.

In 1988, Mauro Alvarez of Brazil’s University of Maringa Foundation found similar results but also faced criticism for his methodology and later agreed that stevia doesn't pose a fertility risk. Despite these controversies, the FDA hasn't approved whole stevia leaves or crude extracts for food use, citing inadequate toxicological information. However, they consider certain stevia glycosides, like Rebaudioside A, generally recognized as safe (GRAS).

Recent research shows that stevia does not promote infertility. For example, a 1991 study on hamsters found no growth or fertility issues, and a study on female reproduction found no harmful effects from stevia. In fact, some research suggests stevia might even protect fertility and reproduction. One study showed that stevia improved testosterone levels and sperm quality in male rats exposed to a harmful food coloring.

Stevia is also packed with beneficial compounds like carbohydrates, dietary fibers, vitamins, minerals, and phenolic compounds. It's even shown potential in managing diabetes and other health conditions. Here are some of the key health benefits associated with stevia:

  • Antidiabetic: Stevia has been shown to help regulate blood sugar levels. It does not cause a spike in blood glucose levels, making it a suitable sweetener for people with diabetes.
  • Antihypertensive: Stevia can help lower blood pressure. Some studies have indicated that it may have a beneficial effect on hypertension.
  • Antimicrobial: Stevia has antimicrobial properties, which means it can help inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and pathogens.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Stevia contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects, helping to reduce inflammation in the body.
  • Antitumor: Some research suggests that stevia may have antitumor properties, potentially inhibiting the growth of certain types of cancer cells.
  • Antioxidant: Stevia is rich in antioxidants, which help combat oxidative stress and protect the body from damage caused by free radicals.
  • Digestive Health: Stevia has been traditionally used to treat digestive problems. It can help soothe an upset stomach and improve digestion.
  • Weight Management: As a low-calorie sweetener, stevia can be a helpful tool for those looking to manage their weight by reducing calorie intake without sacrificing sweetness.
  • Oral Health: Stevia does not contribute to tooth decay and may even help reduce the formation of dental plaque and cavities.
  • Liver and Kidney Health: Some studies indicate that stevia may have protective effects on liver and kidney function, helping to maintain their health and efficiency.
  • Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory: Stevia's antioxidants help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, which are linked to various chronic diseases.
  • Reproductive Health: Recent studies suggest that stevia may have protective effects on reproductive health, including improving sperm quality and protecting testicular tissues from damage.

Unlike artificial sweeteners, which are linked to various health risks, stevia is a natural sweetener with health benefits. So next time you’re looking for a sweet treat, consider stevia, along with other natural options like ripe fruit, maple syrup, and raw honey.
